(the entire July session)
Note: We may look nice in white, but this color is the absolute worst to work out in. As we sweat everything underneath becomes see-thru and our technique of washing it all in a bucket of warm water with a little detergent doesn’t really get the stains out. I may never wear white again.
Week 2 Completed.
Well this week was full of ups and downs, aches and sicknesses, and we unfortunately had to say g’bye to the beginners as their course finished on Saturday.
All the days run together, which is easy when each day is the same schedule. Main points: Jessie hurt her back and experienced true Aryuveda medicine. Katy’s been stuck with a cold, I luckily only have the sniffles, but more on Indian medicine in a later post. Overate a bunch of crappy Italian food, but it still beats anything coming from the ashram kitchen. Connected with a bunch more people in the program, found new yummy restaurants, and punched a few kids when necessary. Yes, I know it’s not very yogi of me but listen for a second.
Every year during the rainy season pilgrims from all over the country come to Rishikesh to pay thanks to Lord Shiva. In one of the Hindu stories this God drank all the poisonous water to save his people, which is why he is blue-skinned and has slits on his throat. This being a holy city attracts thousands of young men to march, chant, and take over the streets to show gratitude for Shiva’s act. They walk barefoot, some in sandels, and some crawl. They wear all orange, blow whistles constantly, and sleep anywhere and everywhere. When they see a Westner they stalk, gawk, take endless photos, and one even Tebowed in front of me (I’m sure he has no idea what that means, but you can picture it). It is seriously a form of harassment. I’ve been followed, my ass grabbed (which I returned w/a fist to his face), Melly (the Australian Jew) had her boob grabbed, and a few of us were almost run over while crossing the bridge. I walk with my elbows out, head down, and block any photo or video being taken. I forgot what this place was like before they came and thankfully it’s over by Tuesday so we can walk the streets safely again.
Anyway week two’s over, I aced my practical and written test even though I could hear my voice shaking as I sang two chants this week (if anyone wants some entertainment I’ll gladly send you a video of me singing in Sanskrit). Mediation has not gotten anywhere and I fell asleep a few times. When talking to others they admit this type is far from what they’ve done and there isn’t a chance I’ll learn much from here. As soon as the goons leave I’m going to head to the Beatles ashram where I’m told has great energy and a ton of private spots to meditate in. Ralf, the German stunt choreographer is going to show me. He is another great piece to our mix of students. He did the fighting choreography for Ninja Assasin and Inglorious Bastards. Possibly more films, but he’s not much of a talker.
I have a ton of more posts to follow since I refuse to pay the Internet guys. Pretty please email me at firstname.lastname@example.org so I can stay updated on your lives. I have a ton of time to write and it takes a sec in my friend Shiva’s shop to “borrow” Internet to send and receive your emails.
